Registration deadline is January 13.

The Local Government Commission will hold its 11th annual New Partners for Smart Growth Conference February 2-4, 2012, in San Diego. For the first time, landscape architects who attend can earn professional development hours under the Landscape Architecture Continuing Education System (LA CES).

ASLA is a longtime sponsor of this premier smart-growth event. The multidisciplinary conference will attract participants from across the country, including landscape architects, elected officials, planners, public health officials, transportation professionals, developers, environmentalists, architects, and many others.

The program will feature more than 100 sessions and workshops on a wide range of topics. The program also includes more than a dozen optional tours of local model projects, and a dynamic optional workshop on February 1 that will focus on the connection between equitable development, environmental justice, and smart growth. Plenaries, implementation workshops, focused trainings, and coordinated networking activities round out the program.

ASLA will have a booth at the conference, with ASLA members in attendance during breaks between sessions and at the Thursday evening networking reception. If you're at the conference, please stop by and say hello.

The registration deadline for the event is January 13. To learn more about the program, and to register online, visit the site. To view course offerings available for LA CES credit, go to the LA CES site and search under Local Government Commission as the educational provider.

Every February the Piedmont Landscape Association hosts an annual seminar (formerly called the Central Virginia Landscape Management Seminar). This event strives to bring gardening enthusiasts and landscape professionals together in an educational setting. Ecological principals of both manmade and natural landscapes, meadow systems, woodland management and how stone can be integrated into the landscape as an element. Additionally, as a foundation to these objectives the PLA's mission is to unite all landscape-related professionals (i.e. gardeners, landscape architects, horticulturist, extension agents, arborist, designers, etc.); encourage high standards of business ethics; provide reliable information and educational programs; offer opportunities for networking; and provide service to the community through volunteer projects, scholarships and other educational programs.

Join the James River Green Building Council on February 25th, 2012 from 11-3:30pm for our first Green Films day, being hosted by the Byrd Theatre in Richmond, VA! Come view three different sustainable films for only a $5 donation! This series is open to the general public, professionals, students and anyone else interested in environmental issues.

  • 11:00am-12:30pm, Blue Gold: World Water Wars
Filmmaker Sam Bozzo examines the growing battle over control of the global water supply in the documentary Blue Gold: World Water Wars. The film examines how major corporations and financial institutions are buying up territories where large water supplies can be found, the fight to protect the Great Lakes, allegations that one of the world's most powerful political families is attempting to corner the market on water in Paraguay, and what ordinary citizens can do to keep the water supply free and shared fairly by all. Based on the book by Maude Barlow and Tony Clarke, Blue Gold: World Water Wars was an official selection at the 2009 Palm Springs International Film Festival.
  • 12:45pm-1:35pm, Greenlit
Movie people are legendarily liberal and left leaning, particularly when it comes to the environment. Greenlit puts their commitment to the test as filmmaker Miranda Bailey (executive producer of The Squid and the Whale) follows the production of The River Why, starring Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights) as it attempts to keep an environmentally friendly set thanks to the supervision of a "green" consultant. What starts off with great enthusiasm quickly devolves in this insightful and hilarious film.
  • 1:50pm-3:20pm, On Coal River
Ed Wiley was a former miner who decided he'd had enough when he learned that contamination from Massey's mining projects was making water unsafe to drink at a local elementary school - a school attended by his granddaughter. Wiley became part of a local campaign to demand accountability from Massey and enforcement of environmental regulation, as well as a new school located a safe distance from the source of the pollution. Filmmakers Francine Cavanaugh and Adams Wood chronicle this battle between people, government and corporate interests in the documentary On Coal River, which was an official selection at the 2010 Silverdocs Documentary Film Festival.

Pre-registration and payment is preferred for this event! $5 in advance and at the door, please do not pre-register without payment!

Please register by Thursday, February 23rd. Refreshments will be available for purchase from the Byrd Theatre, located at 2908 West Cary Street  Richmond, VA 23221. The program for the day will start promptly at 11:00am, so please allow yourself  time for check-in and seating prior to the program start.
