The courtyard is comprised of an integrated garden /stormwater system, sidewalks, gathering place, the entrance to eleven apartments, and a fountain to minimize the sound of the passing trains. The garden /stormwater system is planted with predominately native species, chosen to respond to a wide variety of light, moisture, soil type, and functional demands.
The landscape architect focused on the design of the thoughtful site details while simultaneously meeting the demands of sustainability. The courtyard garden includes areas for residents to circulate and gather while simultaneously distributing, collecting, and cleansing all of the stormwater runoff from the site. In addition, the courtyard garden creates an internal micro-climate contributing to reduced heating and cooling costs for the building, thereby lessening demand on local utilities.
