VA ASLA Awards Programs

The Virginia Chapter ASLA bestows a variety of awards to its members and allied professionals on an annual and bi-annual basis. The awards are typically presented at the Chapter's annual meeting and dinner, held during the fall at a location determined each year by the Executive Committee.

The awards sponsored by the Virginia Chapter ASLA on an annual basis include the:

  • Stewardship Award;
  • Allied Professional Award;
  • Distinguished Service Award,
  • President's Award; and
  • Student Scholarships

Bi-annually, on even numbered years, the chapter also sponsors a juried professional and student awards program. Presentation of the juried awards is made at the annual meeting dinner.

Each of the chapter awards and recognitions is described in more detail below.


M. Meade Palmer Medal

To celebrate the extraordinary professional contributions of our late colleague, M. Meade Palmer, the Virginia Chapter of The American Society of Landscape Architects has established a new award in his honor. The M. Meade Palmer medal will be awarded toan individual who exemplifies the values, sensibility and spirit reflected in the life and work of Meade Palmer.

Stewardship Award

The Stewardship Award is presented for outstanding contributions to the protection and management of the natural resources of the Commonwealth. It is awarded annually to an individual or organization based upon nominations submitted by the membership, and voted upon by the Chapter Executive Committee. Nominations should be submitted to the Executive Committee by February 28th of each calendar year.


Allied Professional Award

The Allied Professional Award is presented for an outstanding contribution to the profession of landscape architecture with national or state-wide, regional, or local impact in Virginia. It is awarded annually based upon nominations submitted by the membership, and voted upon by the Chapter Executive Committee. Nominations should be submitted to the Executive Committee by February 28th of each calendar year.


Distinguished Service Award

The Distinguished Service Award is presented at the discretion of the Chapter Executive Committee to recognize an individual Virginia Chapter Fellow or member who has demonstrated sustained outstanding service to the Virginia Chapter. Nominations for this award may be submitted to the Executive Committee at any time during the calendar year. The Executive Committee considers potential candidates prior to the annual meeting each year.


President's Award

Presented at the discretion of the current Chapter President, the President's Award recognizes the efforts made by one or more individuals on behalf of the Chapter and its programs over the course of the previous year.


Annual Scholarship for Excellence in the Study of Landscape Architecture

Each year, the Chapter recognizes two students, one at each of the accredited landscape architectural programs within the state—University of Virginia, and Virginia Polytechnic University—based upon the recommendations of the faculty. The student scholarship recipients receive a certificate and a monetary award at the annual meeting.  The student scholarship recipients receive a certificate and a monetary award at the annual meeting; submissions must be to the chapter by April 1st.

Bi-Annual Professional Awards

The Chapter sponsors a professional awards program on a bi-annual basis. The purpose of the program is to recognize excellence, exemplary performance, and significant contributions by the landscape architecture profession within the Commonwealth of Virginia; to encourage the application of visionary and progressive solutions to the issues, problems, and opportunities challenging landscape architects; and to provide a forum for the review and evaluation of work currently shaping our environment. Submissions are reviewed in three categories: design, planning and analysis, and research and communications. A jury is convened to review the submissions and select honor and merit award winning projects. The awards are presented at the annual meeting.
