Annual Scholarship for Excellence in the Study of Landscape Architecture

To encourage continued advancement in the profession of landscape architecture the Virginia Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects provides recognition and financial assistance to students for “excellence in the study of landscape architecture” by providing an annual award and stipend of $500. The award and stipend will be awarded to a continuing student at each of two major universities in the state, University of Virginia and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, who most clearly exhibits excellence in their landscape architectural studies. The award and stipend will be awarded at the Virginia Chapter ASLA annual meeting. To be eligible for the award a student must:

  1. be enrolled the Landscape Architecture Department at one of these two institutions, planning on returning for at least on additional year of study,
  2. and not have received the award previously.

The department faculty at each institution will be asked to recommend, from among their eligible student body, a recipient for the award from each institution to the Executive Committee of the Virginia Chapter of the ASLA. Recommendations will be received by May 1st of each year. The criteria for the award shall be based on excellence in the study of landscape architecture as demonstrated by:

  • overall grade point average or quality credit hour average,
  • grade point average or quality credit hour average within the landscape architecture department,
  • performance within the design studios or design labs,
  • evidence of excellence through student awards and design competitions,
  • Innovation and creative ability as judged by the department faculty, and
  • overall commitment to the study of landscape architecture as judged by the department faculty.
